San Juan Mountains AssociationThe San Juan Mountains Association has partnered with Top of the Pines to offer a variety of outdoor education programs for school groups, families, and adults throughout the North Region, including the communities of Montrose, Ridgway, and Ouray. These programs provide a unique addition to the outdoor learning opportunities available in our region by taking full advantage of the diverse wilderness landscapes and natural resources found at Top of the Pines. At the heart of every program is the student experience. We recognize that each person brings a unique relationship with the natural world, and our approach builds on those individual connections. Through hands-on experiences and sensory exploration, we engage the whole person—heart, mind, and body—in meaningful relationships with the landscape. From this foundation, our skilled naturalist educators introduce scientific concepts, ecological principles, and the rich natural history of the region. |

Programs for Schools
Our experienced educators can design custom field-based learning experiences that support classroom objectives and align with Colorado academic standards. We also offer multi-visit and long-term programs that allow students to deepen their understanding over the course of several months or even multiple years. This immersive approach creates lasting connections to place and significantly strengthens students' understanding of local ecology, natural history, and environmental stewardship. Our Educational Approach
Our field education model is built on the understanding that meaningful learning develops through experience. Students first gain the skills and confidence needed to feel comfortable in outdoor settings. As they become familiar with the landscape, they begin to notice the intricate details of the natural world—from plant communities and wildlife habitats to tracks, sounds, and seasonal changes. Once students have established a personal connection to the environment, scientific concepts are introduced in a way that is relevant and memorable. Because learners already have direct experiences with the subjects being studied, they are often more engaged and better able to retain new knowledge. |
